National Register of Historic Places for Albuquerque, New Mexico

 

Albuquerque, New Mexico was honorarily named after Don Francisco Cuervo y Valdez.

The land was once inhabited by the Anasazi Indians. The city is located in Bernalillo County, near the Rio Grande.

 

The first building built on the land was San Felipe de Neri. The city has become home to research facilities, specifically Sandia National Laboratory and Phillips Laboratory.

 

The railroad expanded to Albuquerque in 1880. During 1862, Albuquerque surrendered to the South at the Battle of Glorieta in the Civil War. The General associated with this battle was Henry Hopkins Sibley. The Union was led by Edward R. S. Canby. The University of New Mexico was founded in 1889. During 1926, Route 66 was laid. The Kirkland Air Force Base was erected in 1940.

 

Albuquerque was the founding home of Microsoft.

 

Annually, Albuquerque celebrates the International Balloon Fiesta.
